University of Colorado Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Its internationally renowned investigators are supported by significant federal funding and conduct extensive basic research of cancer-triggering cell activity. They then collaborate with the institution’s clinical researchers to translate laboratory findings into safe and effective drugs, therapies and treatments. The research is organized into a number of programs, one of which revolves around lung and lung-region cancer — it engages the expertise of more than 50 scientists and researchers working to translate fundamental discoveries (such as predictive biomarkers and improved genetics models) into preventive and therapeutic interventions that will decrease the incidence and mortality of cancer affecting the lung region. One-quarter of new patients participate in the center’s own clinical trials. The center makes extensive use of cutting-edge, experimental therapeutics models to set the stage for significantly increased rates of success in clinical trials involving personalized, targeted treatments and to allow further understanding of the molecular mechanisms of targeted drug effects and drug-induced resistance.
