MD Anderson is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center generally acknowledged as the all-around best place in the U.S. for treatment of the disease. The center, which pioneered the concept of multidisciplinary care, provides targeted therapies, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and proton therapy, immunotherapy, or combinations of these and other treatments. Its nursing program holds Magnet Nursing Services Recognition status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. MD Anderson operates the Institute for Cancer Care Innovation, which seeks to systematically improve the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of patient care. The center has nearly 1,100 ongoing research projects, most touching on basic science questions, prevention and personalized risk assessment, molecular-based early detection and treatment, and personalized advanced cancer therapy (matching patients to safer, more effective cancer therapies). Important scientific knowledge gained in the center’s laboratories is quickly put into play in its care clinics — this serves to make the MD Anderson cancer research program among the most productive on the planet. Its new “Moon Shots” program, for instance, promises to accelerate even more the pace of converting scientific discoveries into usable clinical advances.
