UW Carbone Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Wisconsin. It offers a gamut of treatments beyond the staples of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These include brachytherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and video-assisted thoracoscopic resection. Patient and support services include a shop that sells wigs, clothing and accessories designed with the special needs of cancer patients in mind. The center also provides genetic counseling, psychology, social work, spiritual care, acupuncture, healing touch, nutrition therapy and palliative care. Answers to general questions about cancer are available from Carbone’s Cancer Connect service, staffed by oncology nurses on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Central, at (800) 622-8922. The center’s scientific mission is organized around multidisciplinary programs addressing cancer control, cancer genetics, cell signaling, chemoprevention, experimental therapeutics, human cancer virology, imaging and radiation sciences, and tumor microenvironment. More than 250 clinical trials are available to patients.
