Located within Creighton University Medical Center, the Cancer Center offers compassionate, innovative care to patients and support to their families. Current treatment options at Creighton include cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal heated-chemotherapy. This research-oriented center emphasizes both basic science and translational studies aimed at devising new approaches to treatment and to improve quality of life. In particular, Creighton is noted for its novel peritoneal neoplastic disease program, which attracts malignant peritoneal mesothelioma patients from all across the nation. One focus of the research is the study of molecular mechanisms responsible for preventing mutated cells from dying and then transforming into tumors. A transgenic mouse model is currently being developed for this purpose. The research team hopes to use it to analyze the early molecular events that trigger malignant peritoneal mesothelioma and allow it to progress so swiftly.
