Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center is one of several facilities making up the CHI St. Luke’s Health system. It is home to the Lung Institute, a surgical center established by Baylor College of Medicine and focuses on mesothelioma treatment and research. St. Luke’s and Baylor have been partnered since 1961 – by agreement, St. Luke’s serves as Baylor’s teaching hospital, which is why nearly two-thirds of the doctors at St. Luke’s are also faculty members at Baylor College of Medicine. In addition to the Lung Institute, Baylor St. Luke’s operates a comprehensive cancer center that provides oncology care for mesothelioma patents and patients with other types of cancer. The cancer center is accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. St. Luke’s operates a cancer registry; started in 1992, it today contains detailed clinical information about more than 37,000 cancers treated at the institution and provides a wealth of insights to Baylor St. Luke’s cancer researchers. Findings by these researchers frequently are put to the test through clinical trials. As for clinical services, Baylor St. Luke’s takes a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to care. U.S. News and World Report indicates that St. Luke’s flagship facility sees better than expected cancer survival rates, treats a very high volume of Medicare-aged patients, holds certification as an institution adhering to high nursing standards, offers many of the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies, and provides all the essential services a cancer patient needs.
