It is known as an integrated center of research, patient care and education, dedicated to the prevention, early detection, treatment and eventual eradication of cancer. Achievements include establishing the concept of the multidisciplinary team, organ preservation and adjuvant chemotherapy. The institute offers immediate access to the latest cancer-fighting drugs and therapies, including more than 100 cancer treatments not available elsewhere in the region. Faculty members at Wayne State University School of Medicine comprise the cancer center’s entire complement of basic science researchers and clinicians. The center conducts more than 700 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs at any given time, with nearly half of that total involving clinical trials.
