John E. Parker is a board-certified internist and pulmonologist who researches and treats cancers of the lung caused by occupational exposure to environmental toxins. Asbestos-induced malignant pleural mesothelioma is in this category.
 

  • Serves as chief of the pulmonary section in the West Virginia University Hospitals’ Department of Medicine.
  • Known as an excellent diagnostician; certified as a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health “B-reader” (highly proficient at interpreting chest X-rays of miners who have inhaled mineral dust of various kinds over a long period).
  • Participates in NIOSH epidemiologic research studies examining occupational lung cancers; formerly was respiratory disease studies chief of NIOSH’s clinical investigations and epidemiological investigations branches.
  • Teaches at West Virginia University School of Medicine.
  • Co-edited a textbook on occupational lung disease and contributed several chapters to pulmonary medicine textbooks.
